At Maple Park Café, we have always believed that a café can be much more than somewhere to buy a cup of coffee. It can be a place of comfort, conversation, reflection and quiet support.
Recently, David was invited to join Nichola Reeder on Over My Dead Poddy for an episode called “Brewing Community Through Grief.” The podcast explores conversations around death, funerals, grief and the questions many people often feel unable to ask.
For Maple Park Café, this was a very meaningful conversation to be part of.
Talking About Grief, Community and Connection
The episode focused on the role Maple Park Café plays within the setting of Hambleton Crematorium, particularly in supporting families who gather after a funeral.
A wake is never just about food and drink. It is about giving people somewhere to pause, talk, remember, share stories and be together after saying goodbye to someone they love.
During the podcast, David spoke about the importance of creating a warm and welcoming space at one of life’s most difficult moments. For many families, having somewhere close by where they can gather after a service can make a real difference. It removes some of the pressure at an already emotional time and allows people to simply be with one another.
The Role of Maple Park Café
Maple Park Café provides wake services for families using Hambleton Crematorium, offering a calm and comfortable place where guests can come together after a funeral service.
We understand that every family is different. Some people want a quiet cup of tea and a simple buffet. Others may want a more personal gathering with favourite foods, memories and time to talk. Whatever the arrangement, our focus is always on care, dignity and making things as easy as possible for the family.
Being based so close to the crematorium means families do not need to travel far after the service. Guests can move gently from the formal part of the day into a more relaxed setting, where they can share memories and support each other.
Why These Conversations Matter
Grief is something everyone experiences, but it is not always something people find easy to talk about. Podcasts like Over My Dead Poddy help open up those conversations in a thoughtful and accessible way.
By talking honestly about funerals, wakes and the practical and emotional support families need, we can help remove some of the uncertainty around what happens after someone dies.
For David, being invited onto the podcast was an opportunity to talk about the human side of what we do at Maple Park Café. Behind every booking is a family, a story and a group of people trying to navigate a difficult day. Our role is to support them with kindness, warmth and attention to detail.
